Topic: Switching Environments on a Current PartPosted: 13 Dec 2013 at 12:02pm |

Hi Tom,
I'm having trouble switching environments on current parts. For example, I build a part using the Nominal environment. I decide that the pads are too large and I want to build in the Least env. I dont see how I can do that. I've had to go back, change the User default and re-do the footprint. In your older tools I could easily switch between the environments and check the different results. Did that change? Am I doing something wrong - or missing something? Thanks! Bryan ![]() |

Some people get the User and Default Preferences mixed up. In "Setup > Preferences > Design" if you select "User" it is a 1-Tier library system.
If you select Least, Nominal or Most it is a 3-Tier library system.

Hi Tom,
Thanks - I understand that, but my question was how do I change it WHILE BUILDING A PART. I had User Default set to Nominal when I built my part. I decided to change it to "Least" but it doesnt change the footprint I built. I have to start a new footprint to get the "Least" results. |

You need to tell us what version of the program you are using and what component family you are trying to build (this is very important).
The V2013.17 works perfect for me and you seem to be the only one having problems. |

Tom,
I upgraded to 2013.17 yesterday. So here's a pic of the part I did - its in the PQFN with Tab Family. You can see that its set for the Least Env: |

Then I changed the User Default to the Nominal Env - and then said "OK" again - should it update the footprint at that point? It didnt in this case:

The default (or User) environment isn't applied until you select a component family.
If you change your preference while calculating any particular component family it won't be applied until you change the component family.

When you are building a single Footprint, you change the environment in the Calculator, not User Preferences. Select the "Terminal > Environment > Dropdown"

AHHHH - Thats what I was looking for Tom. Thanks - just couldn't seem to find that. And after all that, looks like the pad size doesnt change when switching from L to N anyway. But I'm thinking its because of the tight configuration of the landpattern. There's no room for the pads to grow. Anyway, thanks for your help. All looks good now.

The Library Expert screen changes so fast that I cannot tell the difference when I change environments from Least to Nominal. The only thing that's noticeable is the Courtyard Excess spacing. But you can easily see the pad dimensions when you switch environments by selecting the "Footprint" tab.
