We added component lead pictures in V2013 so you can visually see where the Toe and Heel are in both the Calculator and in User Preferences.
 
The Molded Body and J-Lead are the only 2 component families that have the Heel on the outside.

Under the Setup menu when you select an item to modify would it be possible to have a graphic display of the item you are modifying?
 
For example under setup-components-surface mount-PLCC the PLCC package would display under the 'component family options' on the right.
 
Perhaps the display could update showing orientation & origin etc. as it is selected?
